Music Magazine Evaluation - Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

During all stages of both the preliminary task (the college magazine publication) and the music magazine task, i feel as though my skills in the Apple Mac software have absolutely accelerated - considering the fact that before the initial start of my media work i hadn't used InDesign or Photoshop before.

I have furthered and gathered a range of skills with using the software used throughout all stages of both the preliminary task and the Music Magazine tasks.
These skills have been mainly in the Indesign and Photoshop programs - i have learnt how to construct, develop and finalise the production of many different magazine publication pages - such as my front cover, double page spread and contents page.

The initial skills i learnt were to 'place' images into an InDesign document using different shaped boxes to create a frame around the photography. I then advanced my use of the white and black arrows on InDesign - using the Black to move and edit the actual frame and the White to position the image within the frame itself. I also used the Fitting tool to fit the image to frame when it was needed.

With those images; i used photoshop to crop the images so that i could center the focus of the image that i took. Then using the Brightness/Contrast tool to highlight the photography - brightening it and making it more appealing to the viewer.
This use of editing images enables my images to look high quality and professional so that in turn my overall publications will then look professional.

Throughout the whole of my work i used text boxes in InDesign to add all the text onto my publications. Using these text boxes i was able to use all of the different fonts and edit them correctly to make them work to my specified synergy.

There have been many different skills that i have learnt using the technologies available to me; however i also believe that my skills in writing and analysing have also improved greatly.
I have furthered these skills in my analysis of all my publication work that i have created for both tasks - reviewing what i have created and recognising any improvements needed to be made.
I also feel that i improved my writing skills - by working on my Double Page Spread i was able to create a professional looking and well-read/written article to include my publication.

All in All, i feel as if i have furthered many skills in the use of the Mac Software - in both InDesign and Photoshop - and also my skills in English - both language and literature.
This has all come together to enhance my overall media production.

Music Magazine Evaluation - Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

In my opinion; i believe that the most appropriate distributor of my Media product would be Bauer Consumer Media.
This is due to the fact that they already have the knowledge and experience of a music magazine needed to make mine successful with their production of Q magazine and Kerrang magazine - however; they also have the same expertise with magazines such as Closer, Grazia and Heat which are all Celebrity/Fashion magazines which will be useful for the more Celebrity orientated elements of my magazine.
I also believe that although they have a few magazines already in production that have similar audiences and genres, i believe that with my magazine i have the right balance between just straight music throughout, and only just celebrity gossip columns to make it a successful, unique publication.

Bauer Media (whose headquarters are in Hamburg, Germany - however they also own 15 more offices located all over the world) reaches over nineteen million UK adults across many multi-media publications. They have more than eighty influential media brands spanning a wide range of interests, including heatGRAZIACloserMCNFHMParkersMATCHMagic 105.4Kiss 100Kerrang and 4Music.

They offer over 300 magazines across 15 countries as well as a collection of TV, online and Radio productions; that turnover a Revenue of 1.79billion Euros for the company.
Bauer began their venture into Radio production in 1990 with the launch of Kiss; which is now the ever popular Kiss 100; and then came Melody FM which was transformed into the market leader Magic 105.4.
In 1996, Bauer acquired the digital TV Music Channel named The Box - which have developed into the subsidiary Box Television, a join seven channel venture with Channel 4.
By launching Closer (magazine publication) in 2002 and Grazia - which is acclaimed at being Britain's First Weekly 'Glossy' in 2005. These two publications are now some of the most popular Celebrity gossip and style magazines in the current UK magazine market.
Today; Bauer has over 80 influential publications and 'Brand Names' that are distributed to a wide range of audiences over many different medias.

By researching into the work of Bauer Media (sometimes shortened to H.Bauer) i have realised that Bauer are a very mixed-media distributor. However, what they have are very clear categories of genre and audience in each publication.
What my magazine can offer this distributor is a chance to mix these and therefore, widen their chosen audience groups. I believe that there is a gap for my magazine in Bauer Media due to the fact that they will be able to offer my magazine their expertise and gathered knowledge from experience with their existing publications; but my magazine can offer them the chance to broaden their directed audiences and genres - this in turn, should help to generate a large amount of sales for my magazine due to the diverse audience.

Music Magazine Evaluation - Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I will begin answering this Evaluation question by analyzing my Music Magazine productions and deciding upon the particular social group that i feel is represented in my final products.
During the development stages of the music magazine task, i researched into the already established music magazines that are currently on the market at the moment.
I mainly researched into the work of Rolling Stone (http://www.rollingstone.com/) and NME (http://www.nme.com/)- i therefore feel that i have been influenced greatly by these publications in the production stages of my Front Cover, Double Page Spread and Contents Page.
Both of these established publications are Indie/Rock music genres - which i feel i have represented well in my magazine with the chosen artists and syngery.
However; i also feel as though there is a target market of readers of ICON! that would be into more Mainstream/Pop music - which i also feel i catered towards.

By using the Photography chosen; i feel that i not only represented the meanings and connotations behind my Masthead title (ICON!) by creating a 'persona' of celebrity around my models; and by styling the shoot in way that i felt relevant to my genre/synergy.

My magazine initially is targeted at teenagers who are fans of Indie/Rock/Mainstream music and fans of the 'celebrities' involved in the publication.
Teenagers of today are very obsessed and intrigued by the world of 'celebrity' and everything involved with their careers and private lives.
This is why for my publication i decided to focus more on the actual 'star' than their actual music - this will really engage with my target audience of teenagers (mainly girls between 14-25).
I chose to use these images that i took for a Fashion Photography shoot; due to the fact that i believe they look really professional and paint the subject in a 'celebrity' light.

I believe that not only am i representing and targeting teenagers with the use of young celebrities, but i am also appealing to them with my chosen themes and syngery.
I chose initially to use the theme of Black, White and Red which i felt was very professional looking and looked chic/stylish enough to draw in particular teenage social groups. I also feel that my use of young fonts and easy to read compositions are really relatable to my target audience

In my opinion; i feel that i have related to the teenage social groups of 'indie', fashionable teens who are very aware of the world of Music, Fashion and Celebrity throughout the entirety of my Music Magazine due to all the factors previously mentioned - (Photography, Research into NME and Rolling Stone and the use of my Colour schemes and Font/Composition Themes). Overall, I believe I have both managed to challenge and support the dominant ideologies that are thought to relate to all music magazines by researching into what factors i believed that the target readers of my magazine would want to read/view and either worked with these or challenged them by putting my own spin on the work. I feel that i have created a unique music magazine, but one that isn't however only for a niche market.

Music Magazine - Finished Front Cover

This my Finished Front Cover for my Music Magazine named ICON!
I believe that i have succeeded in created a really eye-catching front cover with plenty of information to draw in the reader and make them want to continue to read on.
I have related my completed Front Cover to the ongoing theme of both my Double Page Spread article and my Double Page Front Cover - by doing this i feel as if i have given my magazine a running synergy that will help to establish my magazine as a brand and give something for the reader to associate my magazine with.
I am really pleased with the over-all 'look' of my Music Magazine; this is due to the fact that i have used high quality photographs throughout that all relate to the brief and the people in the images represent music 'stars' that i have created for this purpose.
I chose to call my Magazine ICON! because i felt that it really related well to the Music Industry at the moment due to the "celebrity" music artists that so many people look up to and view them as inspiration and as a muse.
