Music Magazine Evaluation - Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

During all stages of both the preliminary task (the college magazine publication) and the music magazine task, i feel as though my skills in the Apple Mac software have absolutely accelerated - considering the fact that before the initial start of my media work i hadn't used InDesign or Photoshop before.

I have furthered and gathered a range of skills with using the software used throughout all stages of both the preliminary task and the Music Magazine tasks.
These skills have been mainly in the Indesign and Photoshop programs - i have learnt how to construct, develop and finalise the production of many different magazine publication pages - such as my front cover, double page spread and contents page.

The initial skills i learnt were to 'place' images into an InDesign document using different shaped boxes to create a frame around the photography. I then advanced my use of the white and black arrows on InDesign - using the Black to move and edit the actual frame and the White to position the image within the frame itself. I also used the Fitting tool to fit the image to frame when it was needed.

With those images; i used photoshop to crop the images so that i could center the focus of the image that i took. Then using the Brightness/Contrast tool to highlight the photography - brightening it and making it more appealing to the viewer.
This use of editing images enables my images to look high quality and professional so that in turn my overall publications will then look professional.

Throughout the whole of my work i used text boxes in InDesign to add all the text onto my publications. Using these text boxes i was able to use all of the different fonts and edit them correctly to make them work to my specified synergy.

There have been many different skills that i have learnt using the technologies available to me; however i also believe that my skills in writing and analysing have also improved greatly.
I have furthered these skills in my analysis of all my publication work that i have created for both tasks - reviewing what i have created and recognising any improvements needed to be made.
I also feel that i improved my writing skills - by working on my Double Page Spread i was able to create a professional looking and well-read/written article to include my publication.

All in All, i feel as if i have furthered many skills in the use of the Mac Software - in both InDesign and Photoshop - and also my skills in English - both language and literature.
This has all come together to enhance my overall media production.

Music Magazine Evaluation - Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies in the process of constructing this product?

Music Magazine Evaluation - Questions 4 & 5

Who would be the audience for your media product? and How did you attract/address your audience?

Music Magazine Evaluation - Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

In my opinion; i believe that the most appropriate distributor of my Media product would be Bauer Consumer Media.
This is due to the fact that they already have the knowledge and experience of a music magazine needed to make mine successful with their production of Q magazine and Kerrang magazine - however; they also have the same expertise with magazines such as Closer, Grazia and Heat which are all Celebrity/Fashion magazines which will be useful for the more Celebrity orientated elements of my magazine.
I also believe that although they have a few magazines already in production that have similar audiences and genres, i believe that with my magazine i have the right balance between just straight music throughout, and only just celebrity gossip columns to make it a successful, unique publication.

Bauer Media (whose headquarters are in Hamburg, Germany - however they also own 15 more offices located all over the world) reaches over nineteen million UK adults across many multi-media publications. They have more than eighty influential media brands spanning a wide range of interests, including heatGRAZIACloserMCNFHMParkersMATCHMagic 105.4Kiss 100Kerrang and 4Music.

They offer over 300 magazines across 15 countries as well as a collection of TV, online and Radio productions; that turnover a Revenue of 1.79billion Euros for the company.
Bauer began their venture into Radio production in 1990 with the launch of Kiss; which is now the ever popular Kiss 100; and then came Melody FM which was transformed into the market leader Magic 105.4.
In 1996, Bauer acquired the digital TV Music Channel named The Box - which have developed into the subsidiary Box Television, a join seven channel venture with Channel 4.
By launching Closer (magazine publication) in 2002 and Grazia - which is acclaimed at being Britain's First Weekly 'Glossy' in 2005. These two publications are now some of the most popular Celebrity gossip and style magazines in the current UK magazine market.
Today; Bauer has over 80 influential publications and 'Brand Names' that are distributed to a wide range of audiences over many different medias.

By researching into the work of Bauer Media (sometimes shortened to H.Bauer) i have realised that Bauer are a very mixed-media distributor. However, what they have are very clear categories of genre and audience in each publication.
What my magazine can offer this distributor is a chance to mix these and therefore, widen their chosen audience groups. I believe that there is a gap for my magazine in Bauer Media due to the fact that they will be able to offer my magazine their expertise and gathered knowledge from experience with their existing publications; but my magazine can offer them the chance to broaden their directed audiences and genres - this in turn, should help to generate a large amount of sales for my magazine due to the diverse audience.

Music Magazine Evaluation - Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I will begin answering this Evaluation question by analyzing my Music Magazine productions and deciding upon the particular social group that i feel is represented in my final products.
During the development stages of the music magazine task, i researched into the already established music magazines that are currently on the market at the moment.
I mainly researched into the work of Rolling Stone (http://www.rollingstone.com/) and NME (http://www.nme.com/)- i therefore feel that i have been influenced greatly by these publications in the production stages of my Front Cover, Double Page Spread and Contents Page.
Both of these established publications are Indie/Rock music genres - which i feel i have represented well in my magazine with the chosen artists and syngery.
However; i also feel as though there is a target market of readers of ICON! that would be into more Mainstream/Pop music - which i also feel i catered towards.

By using the Photography chosen; i feel that i not only represented the meanings and connotations behind my Masthead title (ICON!) by creating a 'persona' of celebrity around my models; and by styling the shoot in way that i felt relevant to my genre/synergy.

My magazine initially is targeted at teenagers who are fans of Indie/Rock/Mainstream music and fans of the 'celebrities' involved in the publication.
Teenagers of today are very obsessed and intrigued by the world of 'celebrity' and everything involved with their careers and private lives.
This is why for my publication i decided to focus more on the actual 'star' than their actual music - this will really engage with my target audience of teenagers (mainly girls between 14-25).
I chose to use these images that i took for a Fashion Photography shoot; due to the fact that i believe they look really professional and paint the subject in a 'celebrity' light.

I believe that not only am i representing and targeting teenagers with the use of young celebrities, but i am also appealing to them with my chosen themes and syngery.
I chose initially to use the theme of Black, White and Red which i felt was very professional looking and looked chic/stylish enough to draw in particular teenage social groups. I also feel that my use of young fonts and easy to read compositions are really relatable to my target audience

In my opinion; i feel that i have related to the teenage social groups of 'indie', fashionable teens who are very aware of the world of Music, Fashion and Celebrity throughout the entirety of my Music Magazine due to all the factors previously mentioned - (Photography, Research into NME and Rolling Stone and the use of my Colour schemes and Font/Composition Themes). Overall, I believe I have both managed to challenge and support the dominant ideologies that are thought to relate to all music magazines by researching into what factors i believed that the target readers of my magazine would want to read/view and either worked with these or challenged them by putting my own spin on the work. I feel that i have created a unique music magazine, but one that isn't however only for a niche market.

Music Magazine - Finished Front Cover

This my Finished Front Cover for my Music Magazine named ICON!
I believe that i have succeeded in created a really eye-catching front cover with plenty of information to draw in the reader and make them want to continue to read on.
I have related my completed Front Cover to the ongoing theme of both my Double Page Spread article and my Double Page Front Cover - by doing this i feel as if i have given my magazine a running synergy that will help to establish my magazine as a brand and give something for the reader to associate my magazine with.
I am really pleased with the over-all 'look' of my Music Magazine; this is due to the fact that i have used high quality photographs throughout that all relate to the brief and the people in the images represent music 'stars' that i have created for this purpose.
I chose to call my Magazine ICON! because i felt that it really related well to the Music Industry at the moment due to the "celebrity" music artists that so many people look up to and view them as inspiration and as a muse.

Music Magazine - Front Cover, Adding in Headings of Featured Articles

This is my first Heading (on the right hand side, near the Masthead) including a Featured Article from inside my Music Magazine.
I chose to use the character Marie Kent that i used in my Contents page and elaborated a sub-heading out of what i'd already written about her article in the Contents.
I used the font szlichta07 in white to create a simple yet eye-catching heading and sub-heading, using her name in a capital font.
I then added in a WIN WITH ICON! competition heading, as i felt that reader would see this and be eager to turn onto that page.
This heading was created using the font zapfino in red, using the WIN WITH ICON! part in a larger font to the subheading 'turn to page 31'.
I am pleased with the initial style of these headings and i feel that they fit my synergy and running theme perfectly.

This is my second heading that i created using my Band created in my double page spread called NYLON.
I created two layers of the band name NYLON in font szlichta07, one in red and one in white and layered them up - like with my Masthead.
This creates a really bold Masthead that draws in the reader.
I used a smaller heading with the words 'THE SECRETS ARE OUT' as i felt it was a strong heading, and then added in the sub-heading.
I feel that this heading works well, it's got two bold headings that draw in the reader visually and also will make them want to read more.

My final Heading is my Cover Star Rose Tiller created using the white and red layering in Zapfino for the main heading and sub-heading.
I then added a smaller coverline in white szlichta to entice the reader further, and also to fill in the grey insert i have at the bottom.
I also then added in the Barcode image to give the cover authenticity.

Music Magazine - Front Cover Finished Masthead

This is my final Masthead/Title for my Music magazine cover.
I chose eventually to place the whole background image in the middle of the page with the grey inserts at top and bottom - even though i have previously said i was going to just use the grey at the bottom of the page.
I came to this decision because it felt that the grey along the bottom was far to bold and eye catching and i didn't want to draw attention to it.
I changed my original Masthead by un-grouping it, so that i could work with both layers separately, and edited the font to size 72. This meant that i could place the Masthead covering the majority of the Cover.
I originally placed the Masthead over the middle of the page - however, this restricted the amount of space i had to add in a Date and headings about articles inside the magazine.
The Date i chose to match the date used on the Contents page and i used font Zapfino in white to create this.

Music Magazine - Front Cover Title Development

I also have experimented with the layers of my ICON! title by adding strokes to the font and playing with the order of the layers.
This image is with the ICON! with the white stroke on top - and i feel that this creates a really strong and bold title.
I am strongly considering using this for my final front cover.

Music Magazine - Development of Front Cover

For my front cover for my Music magazine i have again decided to use the monochrome and red colour scheme as this works with the synergy of the Contents Page and Double Page Article Spread.
I also decided upon using a monochrome image from my photoshoot for the Cover Image - however; this image in Landscape, which caused a lot of problems with fitting it into the frame proportionally and professionally.

This is my first attempt at placing the image onto the page.
I first made a box that covered the whole page and then 'placed' the image into this box, then using the white arrow tool i positioned the image into the frame; making sure her face was central and her shoulder touched the edge of the frame.
The decision then was what to do with the white gaps at the top and bottom - i used a box and the eyedropper tool to create this effect.
I decided then that i didn't like the effect of this, because it looks 'odd' without the top of the bow on her head reaching the top of the frame.
I then experimented further:

This time, i placed the image at the very top of the frame so that i didn't have the issue with her bow, and moved the box from the top of the page into the now bigger gap at the bottom.
I feel that this looks better, however i need to work on how to fill the grey gap at the bottom.

The next step was the create the heading - I used the Zapfino font in red; in font size 48. I felt that the title was 'bold' enough, so i created a copy of the title and layered it on top (and then grouped them together) to create a 'shadowed' effect on the font. I am pleased with this result as i feel it add something extra to the title that it doesn't have alone. I feel that a bold heading is key to an interesting front cover.

Music Magazine - Finished Contents Page

This is the finished Contents Page that i created using InDesign.
I find this page really interesting to view as you can see all the featured artists in the issue which will draw in fans of the artists to the magazine and make them want to buy it and read on.
I also feel that the headings and subheadings i created for all the features/articles are very enticing to the reader - they give a small hint to whats to be seen/read in the whole article and will make them want to continue on reading.
The images are all of high quality and i feel that they depict my headings and features well - they give a sort of rich, 'celebrity' feel to the article.
I am also pleased with the use of the monochrome and red colour scheme, i believe that it looks professional and fun.
I enjoyed created this double page spread as i could demonstrate my skills in the application InDesign, and Photoshop (with the editing of my photography) and i feel it has worked well together to produce a professional looking Contents page that relates well to my chosen theme for ICON!.

Music Magazine - Development of a Contents Page

Before the initial production and development of my Contents Page for my music magazine - now named ICON! - i carried out a photoshoot with my friend to create some images to be used inside my magazine - on both the front cover and contents page.
I have chosen a monochrome and red colour scheme for my Magazine which is reflected in the photography chosen in the contents page.
Firstly, i placed an image into a double page spread on my Contents Page..

After 'placing' the image into InDesign on the left hand page of my double page spread; i realized that the picture was too narrow for the page, so i had to add a black panel on the right hand side to fill up the space. I used the 'eyedropper' tool to do this.
I then started to play around with Titles and Subheadings that related to the picture.

I then decided on the font - using the font Zapfino in Red to make an almost logo - 'inside ICON! this month' - i decided to create these words into 3 separate boxes so that i could move them around to wear i wanted them in relation to eachother; and i also used different size fonts to create a logo style heading.
I then came up with the name of my cover star (whose image is the girl on the page) and used her name (Rose Tiller) as a heading using the font szlichta07 in white; then, using the same font but in a smaller size, created a subheading relating to the star and the article featured inside the magazine. This is used to 'entice' the reader into reading further.

My next task was to then start designing my right hand side page and the actually list of the contents; including which images i am using.
Firstly, i knew i had to use a small image of the article previously created - of 'Matt' - which is the small black and white landscape image in the bottom left hand corner.
I then chose to use another image from my photoshoot but use a different name; as if she is a different music artist to the first.
Lastly, the top image is one from my photography experimentations with light painting - i chose to use this as it's an image created with about 5 people which i thought could look like a band. I then chose to call them 'BIRK' as someone in the image has written this with the torch, and in the 'FEATURED' part of my contents page i wrote: "hot band BIRK are let loose in our studio with light painting".

Under the heading of the magazine name, i chose to write the issue date again using the Zapfino font in red alongside the magazine title ICON!... in this heading i chose to create the ICON! title using a lower case 'i' with the rest in upper case because i liked the way this looked.

I then chose to write a FEATURED contents list - a list of all the 'featured' stars which have images on the contents page and perhaps on the Front cover (later to be decided).
On the images, i added a page number and related this back to the FEATURED contents list.
Alongside the page numbers in the list i wrote the name of the featured artist/group and then wrote a small explanation of the article/feature involving them to draw in the reader.

Next to write was the actual contents page which just lists the unfeatured articles, normally ones that feature in most ICON! issues such as Horoscopes.

This is the finished right hand page of my double page spread contents page.
I filled in the less detailed Contents Page list - using page numbers and a small title of the featured articles.
I also added next to the landscape black and white image small text box with saying: "WIN WITH ICON! be in with a chance to meet our cover star ROSE TILLER. Read all about it on pafe 31..." again using the red Zapfino font to make it bold and draw in the readers eye.
I then created a small logo/icon in the bottom right hand corner - by literally just typing icon into two separate text boxes (using Zapfino in black) and overlapping them to create an almost 'shadow' effect. I then grouped the two text boxes today to enable it to be moved around together.

I am very pleased with the final outcome of this page and i feel that all my pictures are relevant and of high quality. My titles and headings are enticing to readers and are created neatly in well chosen fonts.

Music Magazine - Finished Double Page Spread

This is my finished Double Page Spread that has been through a very scrutinizing editing and improvement process using many different publications.
I have extensively used InDesign, PhotoShop and Picnik to enable that my double page spread was completed to the best of my ability.
I am very pleased with this result due to the fact that i feel it is completed to a very high and professional looking standard.
I am very keen to get started now with my Cover and Contents page to fit the synergy of my Double Page Spread..

Music Magazine - Double Page Spread; Final Ideas and Improvements

After properly looking over my music magazine double page spread; I realized that there were quite a few improvements to be made to get it up to standard.
I also was not very pleased with the page image that i had chosen to use - not only was it one i had previously taken and used for my College Magazine project - but it was also not up to scratch in terms of sharpness.

I then came to the decision that the image of the boy with the headphones who was posing as my recently departed band member in my interview story was a very strong image.
I took to re-editing it from the raw image to enable it to be 'perfect' enough to use in my double page spread as a professional image...

Here is a screen shot of me editing my image.
Previous to opening this image into Picnik - an editing website that allows you to easily create amazing effects with your photography - i used Photoshop to firstly use the Spot Healing Brush tool to smooth out Matt's face.
I then put the image into Picnik and used their Blemish Tool and Airbrush to enable his skin to look like a celebrities.
I also used the shine-be-gone tool to remove the shine in his nose.
After this i changed the image to Black and White and then 'painted' the red of the headphones back into the image to make them stand out and enable the image to be eyecatching.

After editing of my image; i played around with placing the new image into my double page spread...
This consisted of placing the image over the whole of the left hand side - this i felt made the image look really strong.
I then moved the Masthead of the article over the top of the image - using Object then Arrange and then "move to front" to enable the title to be seen over the top of the image.
I kept the image in the same colour scheme and font as i feel this still looks really effective.
Now my subheading for my Double Page Spread has been removed and re-scaled to make it fit as another heading and the whole interview text has been moved upwards and the font increased.
I then added a small caption sized image of the previously chosen image that formerly wanted to use - so as to show the other 'band members'.

Here is my finished result:

I am so pleased with the final presentation of the whole interview; photography and double page spread.
I feel it looks very professional and will look great alongside my initial ideas for my Cover and Contents Page.

Music Magazine - Edit of Photos for my Double Page Spread

This is the image that i want to use in my double page spread - placing it in the 2nd column in the middle of the text.
This is the 'original' image that i took in the studio of a class mate listening to music.
I first needed to edit he image by using the 'Spot Healing' tool - this meant that the image would look cleaner and also would make the image look more like a 'celebrity' image.

This is the edited version of the image - after using the Spot Healing tool.
I am very pleased with the effect.

This is the final image that i took and edited using the Photography Studio and edited on Photoshop.
I chose to edit the image into black and white because it means that the image will fit the synergy and theme of my Double Page Spread.Looking at the image now - i have realized that in Monchrome the headphones cannot be seen. I will look into trying to edit the headphones back to red but leave the rest in Black and White.

This image i edited using the online editing website called Picnik - i used the edited colour photograph of Matt and then changed it to Monochrome.
Then using a brush tool - i managed to 'paint' back in the original colour just on the section of the headphones.
I feel that this is a very strong and relevant image.

Music Magazine - Further Development of Double Page Spread with Interview Text

This is my Double Page Spread that i created using the template of my 'rough' pages and the same storyline.
I added and edited the sub-heading; adding the line
"NYLON TALKS SPLITS; FAME AND GLASTONBURY"
which i felt created a buzz around the interview and almost a 'teaser' for what to read.
By writing the interview between the journalist (me!) and the 'stars' i helped me to create a name for both the magazine and the band.
I have decided to call my Music Magazine - ICON! (with the exclamation mark).
I feel that this is a strong music magazine names as nowadays most 'celebrity' musicians play a huge role in becoming role models and icons for their fans and teenagers of the time. I was toying with using the name 'muse' as i felt it had a similar meaning behind it; however; there is the band called muse already existing and i didn't want to play off of that.
My interview is relevant to the storyline and to me; is everything a reader would want to find out about from the band:

In the latest issue of ICON! Nylon graces the cover – not only with a new look; but a recent decrease of members. They took reputable Journalist Charlotte Pavitt backstage at their long awaited headline act at Glastonbury last month to finally confirm or dismiss the alleged rumours of punch ups and breakdowns that later resulted in Matt leaving.

In between the breath taking performances and makeup/hair sessions; Nylon began to tell their story.
Here at ICON! we wanted to know all about the shock departure of valued band member Matt from the band that’s taking our music scene by storm – Nylon. So we caught up with the remaining members fresh from Glastonbury- Emily; Hector; Moses and Adam to get the full story:

Wow, that was some performance – you seem even closer now than you were before! How has the split changed the relationships in the band?
Emily: We’ve all been through it together – the tears, tantrums and triumphs – so we all know what each other are feeling. It’s made us unite.
Hector: I agree. Before Matt left everything was very tense – it wasn’t long before someone snapped.

So what was causing all the ‘tension’ in the band?
Adam: The fame really I suppose – we’ve all come from relatively normal backgrounds and have found the journey to fame very tough. It’s put pressure on our relationships within the band; though hopefully it hasn’t affected our music! (laughs)

The music is still ever popular with your growing amount of fans. How did it feel headlining Glastonbury this year?
Moses: Like you wouldn’t believe; it’s every aspiring musicians dream and ours was fulfilled. The buzz is incredible.
Emily: I just feel incredibly blessed.
Hector: I couldn’t of asked for better people to share the experience with.

And it didn’t feel weird without Matt?
Emily: Of course there will always be a hole where Matt once was – and he will never leave the band properly. He was with us when we released out first number one single and through every memory we have as a band; and that will never change.
Though, we did rock it tonight…
Hector: I would of loved to of seen his face when the crowd where spinning our lyrics back to us; word for word…

Rumour has it that he left of his own accord.. is that true? Did anyone actually make him go?
Adam: Matt felt as if it was his time to leave; no one wanted it to happen. Especially me – we were like brothers.
Moses: He was never cut out for the ‘celebrity’ lifestyle. He’s made his music and 4 no. 1s and I think he feels as if that is enough for him.

Do you think there could ever be a reunion – Take That Style?
Emily: (Laughs) The dynamics of Nylon are completely different to Take That; I’m not sure if he’d ever want to.
Hector: None of us would ever reject him coming back – I mean after all; he’s the one that wrote the hits.

So if Matt was the only songwriter in the band; what’s to be said about the future for Nylon in respect of Albums, Tours and Singles?
Moses: We have a great team behind us who really understand Nylon and the music we’re trying to achieve and put to our fans. They will be recruiting people to write for us – though our input will be at the forefront.
Emily: There have been talks that Matt may just come back to write…

Wow; an exclusive! Has anything been agreed officially about his song writing?
Hector: Nothing is set in stone.
Adam: We’re not to get our hopes up.

Oh you’re keeping it very hush hush. Your fans are also very curious as to your stage fashion – do you all have a stylist?
Emily: Before I joined Nylon as the front singer; I was a Fashion Student; So all styling of the band is done by me.
Moses: She’s our saviour – we’d all turn up in trackies and unshaven otherwise.
Adam: Speak for yourself.

(Laughs) oh wow, so you’re not just a talented Singer then!
One last question – Who will you be staying up late to watch tomorrow here at Glastonbury?
(in unison): The Vaccines.

It’s been wonderful talking to you four and here at ICON! we wish you all the success you deserve!

I have recently edited this page by changing the font from Times New Roman to Trebuchet MS using both Bold, Italic and Bold Italic versions of this font.
I also edited my title by reducing the 'AND' in the title to a smaller size and putting it in it's own box which meant i could place it wherever i wanted and therefore reduce the size of the title.
I needed to reduce the title because my interview was longer than what i had space for (!) this meant that i needed to reduce the size and therefore increase room for my text.
I also changed the subheading to have it on it's own 'line'; and edited it to the colour red to make it more eyecatching.

Music Magazine - Development of a Double Page Spread

This is development of my mock-up of a double page music magazine spread.
Here i furthered the pages by placing a photograph into the middle of the text - this image is meant to represent the band member that left and i felt it was a valid image to tie in with the story i'ved created.
However, looking back at the image of the whole double page spread now, i wish that i had first edited the image into Black and White or 'Monochrome' before placing it - this would mean that it would work well with the synergy of the pages.

This is the same page but with neatened text and with the columns and borders hidden.

Music Magazine - Rough Draft of Double Page Spread

This is my rough draft of an inside double page spread that i created in InDesign.
Firstly, we changed the layout of the page by adding 2 new pages - to enable a double page - and then we altered the columns and borders to fit the specification.
For this particular page; i changed it to have 3 columns with margins of 8mm at the top, 14mm at the bottom, 8mm in the inside and 14mm at the outside - this meant that i could create a double page spread that was fitting to the general specification of magazine pages.
After this; we added a photo box over the whole of the left hand side - and using the 'Place' tool, adding in a relevant image. This image was far to big for the frame, so i used the Fitting tool to Fit the image Proportionally to the frame.
I chose to relate the image to the heading - i feel that the space in the image between the two "band members" represents the missing band member.
After adding a text box, i wrote a simple heading and then played around with the fonts - trying to find an eyecatching and bold headline.
I was very keen to use the szlichta07 font, but in the end i decided to use the Zapfino font and edit the word 'four' into the colour red.
